Common Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)
A large tree growing to 100ft when mature suitable only to large gardens and parks. The leaves are shiny green which turn yellow then brown in autumn. Fagus Purpurea has red purple leaves from May to September. Beech hedges are commonly seen all over Ireland with their distinctive copper brown winter leaves. These leaves are shed in May as the new light green summer leaves appear. Beech need fertile, well drained soil. Avoid heavy poorly drained clays.
